Self-improvement is an excellent term. It means the improvement of one’s knowledge, status, or character by one’s own efforts. It is an act of enhancing or improving one’s self. It includes improvement in various areas like personal development, time management, leadership skills, positive thinking and so on.
A lot of professionals come to me for Communication Skills coaching. I help them improve their communication skills and productivity at work and take them from the level of mediocrity to excellence.
Self-improvement is important because it boosts your confidence level and helps you live a successful and happy life. So here are 7 self-improvement tips or guidelines that will help you to achieve your personal and professional goals in a successful manner.
7 Amazing Tips for self improvement
1.WRITE YOUR GOALS AND START PLANNING
Hearing it for the 1000th time? Simple effort of penning down your goals on a piece of paper is very important to train your mind to achieve those goals. Dreaming to achieve your goals is fine but penning them down is the first thing to do and the second is to design a plan of action.

After you have penned down your goals, design a plan of action. Every time you achieve a particular goal, strike it on the paper and when you strike all the goals off the paper, the satisfaction is beyond words. I have personally tried this too!
Goals are big and small both. Let me give you an example. I wanted to shed 5 kgs but that seemed a bog goal. I broke my goal into 5 parts. With each shed of a kg, I struck off my sub goal and felt motivated to move ahead. Eventually, I reached my goal and oh, what a sense of achievement. The goal was right there on a piece of paper and striking off that paper gave me an all time high.
2. IDENTIFY YOUR TRIGGER POINTS
A lot of people try to achieve their self-development goals but they fail to achieve them owing to some reasons. One of the reasons could be ignoring your weakness or trigger point. There will come barriers, temporary problems, unforeseen hindrances and they act as trigger points. The only thing most of us do is just walk off the goals and settle with the mundane. Hang on there! Let the day pass, regain yourself and continue on your path.
Remember this tip. It’s worth a million. Do not walk off the path on a windy day. Just stay there, lie low for some time and walk again.
3. QUIT YOUR BAD HABITS
If you want to focus on self-improvement, quit your bad habits. Tiny changes can give remarkable results.
Bad habits include lazying up, procrastination, over sleeping, not following a routine besides smoking et al. Every change in a bad habit gives you a new possibility and opens a new door for life. It helps you to establish self-control and also keeps you physically fit.
Let’s take an example of procrastination. It is typically perceived as a negative trait and has a hindering effect on one’s productivity. It is often associated with depression, guilt, low self esteem and inadequacy.
I have helped a lot of professionals in dealing with their procrastination habit. They now manage their time wisely and prioritise work. The result obviously is high self esteem and confidence. Changing a bad habit is as simple as you make it.
4. COMPARISON WITH OTHERS NEVER WORKS
Comparison with others kills your motivation and diverts your concentration to other worldly stuff.
If you feel that there is a need for comparison, always compare the past YOU with the present YOU and that should be your motivating factor.
5. BE ACCOUNTABLE
You are responsible for you success, not your family, not your friends, not your organisation. You are to blame or pat yourself for your today and tomorrow.
This clearly means that it’s your job to work on your action plan in your personal development plan. If you don’t care, no one else will. You own your result and no one else can be blamed. Period.
6. READ SUCCESSFUL STORIES
Watch a movie that motivates you or read biographies or autobiographies. Watch TED talks or read self help books or meet motivating friends. Do whatever works for you but be in the company of successful stories. This will help you to motivate yourself and your mind unconsciously will commence to visualise a successful version of you.
Imagination powers actions. When you imagine your abundant possibilities, you actually start working towards your goal to achieve it. Inspire yourself everyday.
7. MEDITATE
Meditation helps you to focus on your breathing and get in touch with yourself. It improves your concentration and helps you introspect. Meditation, yoga, prayer, seva, chanting are various ways to stay positive. Do whatever works for you.
